Visit of Ukranian Foreign Affairs Minister
The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, met with Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk in Ottawa on May 7, 2007. This was Mr. Yatsenyuk’s first visit to Canada as Foreign Affairs Minister.
Minister MacKay met with Minister Yatsenyuk in Ottawa to discuss the close relationship between the two countries and Canada’s continued support for the reform process in Ukraine.
Following the bilateral meeting between Minister MacKay and Minister Yatsenyuk, Minister MacKay announced a contribution of $5 million to upgrade security systems at airports and other border crossings in Ukraine to prevent nuclear terrorism.
This contribution is part of Canada’s commitment to the Global Partnership against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction, launched by the G8 in 2002, under Canada's leadership.
