Four United Nations observers died on July 26 night, as a result of the Israeli aerial attack. The UN secretary general Kofi Annan says an Israeli attack on a UN observation post was "apparently deliberate". Four unarmed military observers were killed in the air strike in southern Lebanon.

As an active participant in UN peacekeeping operations, Ukraine strongly believes that attacks on UN peacekeeping contingent are inadmissible and urged parties to refrain from any actions, which make the resolution of the conflict even more complicated and bring sufferings to the peaceful population. By way of expressing condolences to Austria, Canada, China and Finland governments and members of the families of the UN observers who were killed, Ukraine calls on all involved parties with all responsible to start seeking a formula of resolving this critical situation and to ensure international peacekeeping presence in the conflict zone. In that connection, Ukraine lays many expectations on the Wednesday international conference in Rome.
